It is in the Douro Superior region, site of one of the best known wines in the world, where the Quinta de Vila Maior is located, with a total surface of 75 hectares.
It is placed in the Valley of Vilariça (=Vale da Vilariça), close to the village of Foz do Sabor, 7 kilometres away from Torre de Moncorvo, in the Bragança district, and some 15 km away from Vila Nova de Foz Côa. Quinta de Vila Maior has the main Dourogrape varieties:
Touriga Franca
Tinta Roriz
Touriga Nacional
Tinta Barroca
Tinto Cão
Sousão
The wines produced by Quinta de Vila Maior are sold at the vineyard facilities and in both national and international wholesale shops.
The beauty of the River Douro and our own relationship with this countryside pushed us to work hard in order to restore the heritage left by my grandfather, Manuel Joaquim Pinto.
At the end of the 19th century, his Porto wines travelled to Gaia in order to be exported all over the world. The growing importance of Dourotable wines, together with the existing potential in the Douro Superior subregion, made us believe it was possible to produce supreme nectars with the grapes of our vineyards.
Thanks to our great teamwork, we can now confirm we were right. We are still aware that there is still much work to be done concerning wines.
In 1889, Manuel Joaquim Pinto, who had already settled in Vila Nova de Gaia and possessed some Porto wine warehouses, acquired several vineyards in the Douro Superior region and set his wine production and transport activities in the village of Foz do Sabor. Later, in 1932, he took part in the foundation of the Casa do Douro (=House of the Douro).
Those were happy days when hundreds of wine barrels were produced in the warehouses and mills of the Casa da Palmeira, and then carried by ship to Vila Nova de Gaia
Nowadays, four generations later, the Quinta de Vila Maior keeps on feeling the same passion for the land and the wine. That is how they gave rise to first-quality DOC Douro nectars, which have been enthusiastically welcomed by wine lovers.
Manuel J. Pinto's activities are still focused in the village of Foz do Sabor, where the Douro currents show strength, wisdom and beauty, spreading the river's gifts downwards. Not far from there, well entrenched between the rivers Douro and Sabor, the Quinta de Vila Maior is to be found, where the hard work carried out to restore and condition the vineyards with cutting-edge technology has been quite fruitful since the first bottled harvest in 1999.
